Ionic-Polar-Covalent Bonding Lab

Question:

What are differences between ionic and covalent compounds?

Instructions:

You are to design a lab that tests 4 physical properties of 4 different compounds. This means that you will perform 16 tests. From your data you should be able to summarize some differences in physical properties between ionic and covalent compounds.

The four compounds you will be testing are:

You will be testing the following three physical properties plus one more that your group has decided upon.

You need to write the following for each of the four tests

Hypothesis Help:

What do you know about ionic and covalent compounds already? What are the definitions of each? How will that effect the properties? Use the definitions to make a prediction. Write 4 predictions (one for each property).

For example: I hypothesis that because ionic compounds bond due to the attraction between negatively and positively charged atoms they will have higher melting points than covalently bonded molecules which do not require the attraction between molecules to be overcome in order to melt.

Procedure Help:

You should have four sets of procedures (one for each test). They should be detailed enough that another group could repeat exactly what you did and get the same results. Some (you will probably think of more...) questions to think about are:
